An Historic Steamboat’s Next Chapter

In 1900, William West Durant commissioned TUSCARORA, a 75-foot double-decker steamboat, for the Eckford Chain of Lakes: Blue Mountain, Eagle, and Utowana. Until 1929, she served resort hotels like the Prospect House and Holland’s Blue Mountain House, and was a link through service to the railhead in Raquette Lake.

Unlike other Adirondack steamboats, TUSCARORA survived—repurposed as a unique summer camp. Today, local residents and preservationists are rallying to restore this rare relic, moving her to a new site on Route 30 in the town of Blue Mountain Lake NY, to inspire visitors with her story.
